Description
This is the most endangered marine mammal - the Vaquita (Phocoena sinus).
In 1997, there were only 600 left.
In 2015, there were only 60 left.
Now?
12.
That's all.
Their decrease in population is largely due to them becoming to bycatch from the illegal fishing for the totoaba. The Mexican government has invested tens of millions of dollars in efforts to eliminate the bycatch, including a gillnet ban that began in 2015. Sadly, this was probably too little too late.
It is thought that the Vaquita will go the way the Baiji did in 2006.
Extinction is forever.
